About the Officina Stellare RiFAST 500 Riccardi Fast Large Astrograph…
When it comes to a “Workshop of the Stars”, the Officina Stellare Telescopes is a leader and their RiFAST Riccardi Fast Large Astrograph Telescope is no exception. Designed by Italian master optician, Massimo Riccardi, this modern astrograph telescope is a modified version of the Harmer-Wynne design. It consists of an aspherical primary mirror, a spherical secondary mirror and a rear lens grouping. What makes the RiFAST design unique is that it’s corrected in the visible-near IR, with more than 80% of the collected light focused in 4-6 microns RMS spot. As a result, the telescope ends up being very lightweight and compact in design – similar to the Riccardi Honders models. The Officina Stellare RiFAST Fast Large Astrograph Telescope achieves its goal – one where an incredibly fast focal ratio is combined with a very wide corrected field.
The materials Officinia Stellare use in their premium quality telescopes include ultra purity single block machined aluminium and carbon fiber because of their lightness, their mechanical and thermal properties, plus optimal resistance to environmental conditions. Mechanical components for the Riccardi Large Astrograph OTA are machined using CNC computer assisted machines from full block aluminum to guarantee superior precision. Carbon fiber components are produced following strict specification and tolerances. Each component for Officina Stellare RiFAST 500 is computer designed and optimized for the best structural performance.
When it comes to the Officina Stellare RiFAST 400 Riccardi Fast Large Astrograph , the holding systems for both mirrors, rings and all the structural components, even the smallest, are CNC machined from a single block special aluminum (6061/7075, Ergal and Anticorodal), stainless steel, titanium and brass. The tubes are made of true carbon-graphite fiber obtained with the use of high vacuum process, allowing Officina Stellare to obtain the best stability of the focus vs. temperature changes still maintaining the best structural rigidity and lightness.
Significant care is taken in the making of the rear holding cell of the primary mirror for the Officina Stellare RiFAST 500 Riccardi Fast Large Astrograph. The entire rear cell for the primary mirror is figured to have the best rigidity/ weight ratio and for the fastest possible thermal stabilization between the environment and mirror. Great attention has been applied to simplify collimation resulting in stable and efficient but easy to use system. The collimation for the Officina Stellare RiFAST is accomplished by acting on just three points (the minimum required points to generate a single plane) using a special, great diameter preloaded bolts (one for each point). This results in a single hand use, simply turn the bolt left or right to move the mirror back and forth (no more complicated operations using push pull screws and locks) in a very intuitive way.
Light shields for the primary and secondary mirrors of the Officina Stellare RiFAST 500 are computer designed and optimized to ensure complete illumination of the field still maintaining a complete protection from stray light. Inside the light shields there are also micro baffles that reduces, coupled with an opaque painting of the surfaces, to nearly zero any possible parasite stray light. In some cases and for particular applications, the light shield for the secondary mirror is made using a special layout that maintain the efficiency of the system while reducing the obstruction for the system. The back plate of the telescope comes standard with a system for adjusting the planarity of the focal plane in order to compensate for any small misalignment in the imaging train, always unwanted and annoying specially on today’s large CCD cameras.
It doesn’t get any better than this!
